Our body is constantly under threat and is attacked by bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms. Nature has provided us with a defense system, known as the immune system to deal with it. This system helps us fight common cold, flu and various other conditions.

Our immune system loses its strength with age and gets weakened after we get a disease. The immune system then needs to be powered up. There are many ways to boost our immune system and a handful of these are as follows:

1.      Keeping good hygiene

Adopting a clean and hygienic lifestyle is just as to avoid getting sick in the first place. Having a bath daily, washing hands after using restroom and before eating, and brushing teeth twice a day helps us kill and shed bacteria we pick up throughout the day.

2.      Eating healthy diet

Eating healthy food is a stepping stone in achieving a healthy life style. Good food nourishes our immune system and helps it do better. Citrus fruits like oranges and lemons are a good source of vitamin C which is important. Avoiding red meat and taking chicken/fish for proteins is also very helpful.

3.      Drinking adequate water

Water plays a vital role in maintaining electrolyte balance, bowel movement, food absorption, regulating body temperature and removal of toxic substances in the body. Having a good water balance and keeping the body hydrated by drinking 7 to 8 glasses of water daily is important.

4.      Regular exercise

A regular exercise is important for various systems of our body particularly cardiovascular and digestive system. It helps boosting our immunity by increasing metabolism. A light exercise (like jogging) of 1 to 2 hours daily is good enough.

5.      Good sleep

Adequate sleep helps elevate our mood and reduce stress. It keeps us fresh and energetic. An uninterrupted 7 to 8 hours sleep at night helps maintaining a healthy immune system.

6.      Manage stress

Stress has a bad impact on our immunity and it needs to be dealt with. Stress can be controlled through relaxation by yoga, meditation, going for a walk and listening to light music.

7.      Quit smoking

Smoking is injurious to health. It not only harms the smoker but also those around him. Smoking increases the likelihood of respiratory and heart diseases. Abstaining from smoking helps keep our immunity strong.

8.      Socializing

Living a lonely life and not socializing doesn’t help with the mood. Meeting people and making friends is a healthy attitude towards living a healthy life. It helps increasing the levels of IgG antibodies (immune proteins) in the body.

9.      Being happy

Leading a happy life and having a good sense of humor helps reduce the level of stress hormones. Laughter is the best medicine and it boosts a type of white blood cells that fights infection.

10.  Vaccination

Strengthening our immune system by regular vaccination helps in reducing and sometimes even eradicating infectious diseases. Vaccination means either giving preformed antibodies from the outside or infecting the body with a weak bacteria so that the body produces antibodies and white blood cells itself.
